TJ’s phone rang as he and Richard were just finishing up in the locker room at the gym, getting ready to head out the court. That was the infuriating thing. If they’d just been two minutes faster getting ready, the damn call would have gone to voicemail.

But no. Of course not. Luck was not on his side today.

His phone started buzzing just as he was swinging his locker door shut. Richard reached inside with lightning-quick reflexes, grabbing the phone while TJ was still registering what was happening.

“Hey, what are you doing?” he asked.

Richard frowned at the screen. “If your bitch of an ex is trying to call you today, I’m gonna give her a piece of my—wait a minute.” His frown deepened. “Who’s Mallory?”

TJ rolled his eyes. “My sister.”

Honestly, he didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Did Richard really think Jane would try to call him today? And what, he was going to defend TJ’s honor if she did? Was that why he and Ronnie were going to such great lengths to be sure he wasn’t alone?

But of course it was Mallory calling. Yet another person who wanted to make sure he was supervised today. He appreciated the concern, but he resented it too. Jane, his wedding—that was all the past. It was melancholy today, sure, but he was ready to move past it. Start looking forward. He didn’t want to dwell on things or be monitored like he was inches away from another depression.

He pulled his locker door open wide and nodded to the inside. “Come on. Put it away. Let it go to voicemail. I’ll call her back later.”

But Richard ignored him, punching the button on the screen and then holding the phone in front of his face. It must be a video call. He beamed at the camera. “Hi, TJ’s sister.”

“Hi,” came Mallory’s puzzled voice through the speaker. “Who the hell are you?”

“Richard. TJ’s buddy. I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about me.” His grin stretched into a smirk. “But I don’t know why he’s been hiding you.”

“She’s married, asshole,” TJ said under his breath. Then he sighed and came around the bench where Richard was sitting so he could see the screen. “Hey, sis.”

Mallory eyed him through the screen. “There you are, little brother.” Her eyes shifted in Richard’s direction. “How’s he doing?”

TJ cocked an eyebrow. “You don’t want to ask me? I’m right here.”

Richard didn’t let him answer for himself either. “Seems to be pretty good, actually. Not as mopey as I thought he’d be.”

TJ poked his friend in the shoulder. “Hey!”

Richard ignored that too. “We just got done with lunch, and we’re about to go play a little pickup.”

“Nice,” Mal said approvingly. “What did you guys do this morning?”

“Oh, my shift didn’t start until noon. He spent the morning shopping for baby furniture with Ronnie.”

“Ahh, Ronnie.” A smile stretched across Mal’s face as she looked back at TJ. “How’s all that going?”

“They’re still just friends, if you can believe that shit.”

TJ scoffed, “I think she was actually talking to me.
